Security+ SY0-701 Study Plan: 6-Week Roadmap That Actually Works
A week-by-week study plan for Security+ SY0-701 built from 2,000+ KNScert student results in 2026.

Security+ SY0-701 has been the active exam since November 2023 and remains the most popular entry-level security certification in 2026. The exam is 90 minutes, up to 90 questions, with a 750/900 pass mark. Five domains: General Security Concepts, Threats/Vulnerabilities/Mitigations, Security Architecture, Security Operations, and Security Program Management.
§Week-by-week plan
Weeks 1-2: Foundations
Cover General Security Concepts (12%) and start Security Architecture (18%). Aim for 8 hours per week. Use one structured course and one official study guide - don't try to read three books in parallel.
Weeks 3-4: The big domain
Threats, Vulnerabilities and Mitigations is 22% of the exam - give it two full weeks. Build a personal cheat sheet of attack types with one defensive control each.
Week 5: Operations
Security Operations (28%) is the largest domain. This is also where most candidates lose points on the real exam, because the questions are scenario-based and require you to apply concepts, not recognize definitions.
Week 6: Mock exams
Do four full-length timed practice exams. If you're not consistently scoring 80%+ on practice, push the exam date two weeks. Don't book the real exam until you can finish a practice in under 75 minutes with a 78%+ score.
§Mistakes to avoid
- Skipping the Performance-Based Questions in your prep - they're worth disproportionate points
- Memorizing port numbers without understanding the protocols
- Using outdated SY0-601 material - the 701 blueprint is meaningfully different
- Booking the exam before your mock score plateaus above 78%
