PMP vs PRINCE2 in 2026: Which Project Management Cert to Pick

PMP and PRINCE2 cover similar ground but they're built for different worlds. PMP (PMI's flagship) is process-and-knowledge-area heavy and dominates North America. PRINCE2 (now owned by PeopleCert) is template-and-stage-driven and dominates UK public sector and most of EMEA.

§Regional reality check

• North America: PMP wins in 9 out of 10 PM job postings
• UK + Ireland: PRINCE2 Foundation is often a hard requirement for public sector
• EU mainland: Roughly even split, with Germany leaning PMP and Nordics leaning PRINCE2
• APAC: PMP dominant outside of UK-influenced markets
• Middle East: PMP heavily preferred, especially for oil & gas and construction

§Exam difficulty

PMP is harder. 180 questions in 230 minutes, situational judgment heavy, and the current PMBOK 7 mindset focuses on principles and tailoring rather than rote process. PRINCE2 Foundation is multiple choice with a 60% pass mark - much more accessible. PRINCE2 Practitioner is harder but still less rigorous than PMP.

§If you can only pick one

Working in North America or APAC: PMP. Working in the UK public sector or any UK government contractor: PRINCE2. Working globally and need maximum portability: PMP, optionally add PRINCE2 Foundation later as a tactical add-on.
