PMP 2025 Study Guide: PMBOK 7 + Agile

PMP is the cert that gets a project manager résumé past HR filters in every country I've hired in - Bangladesh, UAE, KSA, and even remote US clients. It's not just for IT project managers either; construction, telecom, and pharma PMs all pursue it. But PMP 2025 is a different animal from the pre-2021 version. PMBOK 7 threw out the old 47 processes and moved to 12 principles + 8 performance domains. Agile is now ~50% of the exam. Here's how to prep in 60 days.

§PMP eligibility

You need one of the following:

• 4-year degree + 36 months of project leadership experience within last 8 years + 35 hours of PM education
• OR High school/associate degree + 60 months of experience + 35 hours of education
• OR CAPM certification + 36 months of experience + 35 hours of education (new pathway 2024)

The 35 hours can be from any PMI Authorized Training Partner or online providers like Simplilearn, Master of Project Academy, or Google's PM certificate.

230 minutes, 180 questions (5 unscored). Mix of multiple-choice, multiple-response, matching, and hotspot. USD 405 for PMI members, USD 555 non-members. No published pass mark - it's psychometrically scored across three domains.

If you're a waterfall-only PM, you must learn agile mindset (Scrum, Kanban, SAFe basics) - not just the ceremonies but the values behind them. Most first-attempt failures are agile-weak candidates.

• Weeks 1–2: PMBOK 7 12 principles + 8 performance domains. Understand the shift from processes to principles.
• Weeks 3–4: People domain - servant leadership, tuckman's stages, conflict management, negotiation
• Weeks 5–6: Process domain - scope/schedule/cost management in predictive vs adaptive contexts
• Week 7: Agile deep dive - Scrum roles, ceremonies, artifacts, Kanban WIP, retrospective techniques
• Week 8: 3 full 180-question practice exams. Weak-area drills. Book only when hitting 75%+.

• In agile scenarios: 'convene the retrospective,' 'inspect and adapt,' 'refine the backlog'
• In conflict: 'collaborate/problem solve' > 'compromise' > 'smooth' > 'force' > 'withdraw'
• Never pick 'ask for more budget' or 'change scope' as first response - always assess first
