Pivoting Into Cybersecurity From IT: A Realistic 2026 Roadmap

The cybersecurity skills shortage is real but the entry-level job market is rougher than the headlines suggest. In 2026, the gap between 'employer wants 3 years experience for an entry-level SOC role' and 'I have zero security experience' is genuinely hard to bridge. Here's what actually works.

§Pivot paths that work

From helpdesk

Best path: Security+ → CySA+ → land a SOC Analyst I role. Realistic timeline 9-12 months. Add a home lab (Wazuh, Security Onion) to your CV - it tips you over the line in interviews.

From sysadmin / network admin

Best path: Security+ (skip if you already have CCNA or similar) → cloud security cert like AWS Security Specialty or AZ-500 → infrastructure security engineer roles. Realistic timeline 6-9 months.

From software developer

Best path: Skip Security+, go straight to a hands-on cert like BTL1 (Blue Team) or eJPT (offensive) → application security engineer roles. Your code-reading skill is the differentiator; lean into it. Realistic timeline 4-6 months for the cert, longer for the role.

§Pivot paths that don't work well

  • Bootcamp-only with no IT background - most graduates don't land security roles within 12 months
  • Stacking 5 certifications before applying - diminishing returns after the second cert
  • Aiming directly at red team / pentest as your first role - almost always requires SOC time first

§What hiring managers actually want

In a 2026 KNScert survey of 240 hiring managers, the top three signals were: (1) ability to articulate one real incident or finding you've worked through, (2) one relevant certification appropriate to seniority, and (3) demonstrated curiosity in the form of a home lab, write-up, or open-source contribution. Notice that 'five certifications' is not on that list.
